Graphic Novel Review: Saga, Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan

15704307Published: October 23rd 2012 by Image Comics.

Format: Graphic Novel, 160 pages.

Goodreads Summary: When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.

Thoughts: Reading something like Saga was a completely new experience for me, because I’d never read a graphic novel before this one. I started this series after hearing Regan from PeruseProject rave about it nonstop. After much time trying to figure out what to read next I decided to step out of my comfort zone and pick Volume 1 up.

The Story itself is bizarre and out of this world. (No pun intended) Following these two characters who just want to keep their newborn safe, was immensely entertaining and the banter thrown between them created so many laugh out loud moments.

“Trust me, this whole freakout is probably just hormonal. You only gave birth, what, a week ago? Your body’s still, like, a wasteland of chemical imbalance.”

It is important to keep in mind that Saga is an adult novel so really people only 18+ should be reading this, and that’s coming from someone who rated this highly. If you’re sensitive to swearing or nudity then this might not be something to pick up. However, the illustration is stunning. Artist Fiona Staples does an amazing job bringing this story to life through her very intricate and detailed works. Each page is a pop of color and I could spend hours just looking at the pictures themselves. Very well done.

For those of you looking to enter the world of graphic novels I might not suggest this one right away, but if and when you do read Saga, it is a true gem. At the moment there are 3 volumes available. Part of me wants to wait until the entire series is completed before I continue, but who knows how long that will take.

Let me know what you think in the comments.
